The Birth Of Hoppip by TheHarley The Birth Of Hoppip by TheHarley
Have you been one of those people puzzling over how needlefelting actually happens? Sure you can see the finished product by browsing through my deviations, but how do I even get there? Is it some magical path? Perhaps a trick?

Look no further!

I've made a deviation specifically to appease your curiosity.

You're welcome.

You know, I've always wondered what happens if these guys get wet, what happens to the wool?

If they're just a little wet, nothing. The wool will dry :). If they're soaked it will just take much longer to dry.
If there's like a lot of pressure behind the water, (perhaps getting sprayed with a pressure washer o.O) it might rip the fibers.

There's actually a method of felting called "wet felting" which has the same idea behind it as needlefelting. Instead of using a barbed needle to get the fibers to tangle together, you would use water and some type of soap/detergent and tangle the fibers by hand. It's a bit hard to explain, but I'm sure if you google "wet felting" you can find pictures and definitely videos on youtube. I've tried it once, but it's more for flat types of things or to cover something (like a rock). I didn't like the "waiting for it to dry" part. lol.

So how sturdy is she if she's just made out of wool? owo

Surprisingly sturdy :3, it's SOOO much wool compacted so tightly together. You could thrown her across the room and she'd stay just like she is in this picture ^-^. It's a pretty amazing process.

I just started needle felting (I made a caterpie not too long ago) and its really helpful to look at someone else's technique to see how I can improve. Thanks for putting this together! ^___^

Wow, that's a lot of work for such a little guy, and I can only imagine some of those stabbings didn't exactly hit the felt like it was supposed to? (Ouch.)

But wow, Hoppip looks so cute <3

Oh yes, there were quite a few stabbings that didn't exactly hit the felt like it was supposed to >.< but... worth it.

Thank you ^^

Could you save felt by puting something inside?

Yes, usually people use core wool (it's much cheaper and felts faster) but I didn't have any at the time ^^;

That's pretty awesome that you actually knew what needlefelting was lol.
It's not hard to learn!
It took me quite a while to make Hoppip. Maybe 20-25 hours total? I'm not 100% sure of the time because I worked on it over a span of time. Like an hour to few hours a day.

It took me longer than it should have because I didn't have a needle tool to use at the time. I was just using an individual needle >.<

hehe I see Kitty and Dori.

Even though I've actually seen you making your mon, it's still really cool to see pictures of the transition from annoyingly fluffy wool to adorable little Pokemon. I'm still working on my Cubone...I've done pretty much nothing on him...or her...since we had our epic phone conversation. I've been distracted with doing...nothing... o_o wow, I seriously have done absolutely nothing for the past week other than sleep and read. That's...wow. GUH I need to go draw something right now...

Oh wait, no, I did go see a movie on....Saturday...my god what have I been doing since then... O___O

It is a really neat process ^.^ I'm glad this explains it well, I was afraid people would look at it and scratch their heads, puzzled.

It isn't too difficult, just time consuming lol. I'm sure you'd do great! Your sculpting skills would give you quite the advantage ;)

So awesome! I'm still pretty baffled at how poking wool with a needle turns it into things, but your process is really interesting to see. It really does look like fun to do, though.

This is very interesting. I have never seen this kind of wool so I am still a bit fuzzy on what exactly you are talking about, but it really sounds like at interesting thing to try. The Hoppip is so cute! I want to make a fleece plush of him when I get done with all my commissions :)
